Thousands march for Whipps
4 February 2,000 people came out on Saturday to demand Whipps Cross Hospital stays as our district general hospital, fully functioning and fully funded. The mood was buoyant and determined as we marched from Whipps Cross to Walthamstow, Save Whipps Cross Hospital banner and samba band at the head.

Every generation and section of our community was there, children, health workers, students, older people. Those who could not walk that distance brought their own powered chairs. The bright February sun, balloons, array of banners and home made placards added something of a festive feel.
As we gathered at the start and at the rally in the Town square the crowds were addressed by health workers, union reps, councillors, faith leaders and our 3 local MPs who were all on the march. Whipps Cross Patients Panel and Pat Stannard editor of the local Guardian also sent messages to the rally.
Some impressions
We were near the front of the march – the drumming provided the perfect rhythm for the day. The local community peered through doors and windows as we passed Ð their curiosity awakened by the noise. As we turned the corner of Bakers Arms, we looked behind us – Wow! – The procession of all of the people behind us stretched back as far as we could see. We all had the same message – KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF OUR HOSPITAL!! – Chris, age 12
Did not manage the whole march, but was so pleased, that I caught it up at Bakers Arms. It was an amazing experience, the drummers were great, the local community were lovely, I saw all the shop owners handing out drinks to the fellow marchers...I am so proud of Walthamstow and Whipps Cross, we have a great community and a great hospital, so WHO is the person who wants to change things?????? There were lots of patient who felt passionately about what Whipps Cross Consultants have done for them and these people are truly grateful. – Whipps Cross staff member.
